 9th SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
July 25, 2010
Holy Martyrs Proclus and Hilary” Three-hended” Icon of Mother of God,  Sv. Muc. Proklo i Ilarije; Ikona Presvete Bogorodice Trojerucice

Sunday Gospel relates this wonderful miracle. After feeding the thousands of people, Jesus told His Apostles to get into a boat and go to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. In the meantime, He went up to a mountain all by Himself to pray. Here is the first great lesson of this Gospel. Christ giving us the example of private prayer. He had a special place, a private place, where He liked to come and commune with His Heavenly Father. We know that Jesus attended the Jewish church every Lord’s day, so that we see in His life the two forms of prayer: public and private. He went to church to sanctify the Lord’s day, and He had a personal place for private prayer. So we are to attend church every Sunday… "where two or three are gathered together in My name, there am I amongst them," Jesus promised. But we are not to neglect private prayer. Christ gave us some good advice about this type of praying. He said: "When you pray, enter into your room, shut the door, and pray to your Father… in secret." What a great need there is today for people to learn how to pray! It is an art that takes time and effort to cultivate.

Lord, save me! (Matt. 14:30)—this is the prayer that each of us always needs because it voices a cry from the soul which is aware of its weakness. This is how the Holy Apostle Peter cried out to the Lord when he was sinking. This cry which came from the bottom of his heart was heard, and the Lord not only saved him, but directed him onto the road of firm faith: O you of little faith, why did you doubt (Matt. 14:31)? This prayer of the Chief Apostle has since become the foremost cry of every soul that thirsts for salvation. We have need of it just like we need air, light and food; it is near to the heart of each of us because we, too, like St. Peter, are threatened by the stormy sea.
